What clear aligners actually are.
Clear aligners are a series of thin, custom-made trays that fit over your teeth. Each tray is shaped slightly differently from the one before it, so wearing them in order moves your teeth a small step at a time. You take them out to eat and to brush, and you move to the next tray on a schedule Dr. Romans sets for your case. They handle crowding, spacing and a lot of bite problems well, and they suit people who will genuinely keep them in for most of the day. If your case needs more force than a tray can apply, or if you already know the trays would sit in a drawer, braces are the better answer and Dr. Romans will say so at the consult.

What wearing them is really like.
You keep the trays in for most of the day and night, and take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush. A new tray feels tight for the first day or two. That tightness is the tray doing its job, and it settles.
Sometimes a tooth does not follow the tray. That is normal, it is not a failure, and it is exactly why you come in for checks instead of just collecting a box of trays. When something is off track, the usual answer is a fresh scan and a revised set of trays, planned by the same orthodontist who planned the first set. Nothing waits on somebody else's schedule.

Braces do not depend on you remembering, and they can apply force in ways a removable tray cannot, so a complex case can finish better in braces. How many hours a day do I have to wear them?
Most of the day and night. You take the trays out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush, then put them straight back in.
Time out of your mouth is time your teeth are not moving, which makes wear the one part of aligner treatment that is genuinely in your hands. Dr. Romans will be straight with you at the consult about whether that fits your life.
Can my teenager or younger child use clear aligners?
Often, yes. Invisalign First is made for younger children who still have some baby teeth, and Invisalign Teen exists for teenagers, alongside in-house aligners.
Whether aligners are the right call depends on the bite and on how reliably the trays will actually be worn. That is a judgement Dr. Romans makes with you at the consult rather than a rule. See braces for kids or early treatment for the alternatives.
Do you still take putty impressions?
No. Your teeth are captured with a digital scan instead, so there is no tray of impression material and nothing to gag on.
The scan is also what your aligner plan is built from, and it is part of the free consult along with imaging and the exam.
Will I still need a retainer after clear aligners?
Yes. Teeth drift back without retention, whatever moved them in the first place, so retention is part of the treatment rather than an optional extra.
